Clogged Toilet? Quick Tips for Your Next Bathroom Emergency

Clogged Toilet? Quick Tips for Your Next Bathroom Emergency

A clogged toilet is an issue no one wants to deal with. It’s gross, it can prevent you from using your toilet, and you may need to call a plumber for a costly repair. It’s best to avoid clogs altogether.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your toilet clog-free. Here are a few suggestions.

How to Avoid a Clogged Toilet

Don’t Use Too Much Toilet Paper

Toilet paper dissolves in water, but it doesn’t dissolve right away. If there’s too much toilet paper in the toilet, it may not pass through the floor drain or P-trap.  The toilet will become clogged.

If you need to use more toilet paper than the toilet can hold, use some of the paper, flush, and repeat. Never put too much paper in the toilet at once.

Don’t Flush Foreign Objects

You might not believe what people try to flush down the toilet. Flushed items include:

  • Food
  • Sanitary pads and tampons
  • Baby wipes (even wipes advertised as flushable can cause clogs)
  • Q-tips
  • Cotton swabs
  • Toys

Basically, if it’s not toilet paper or liquid, don’t flush it. It can cause a clogged toilet and damage your pipes.

Keep the Lid Closed

Keeping the lid closed reduces the chances of a foreign object accidentally falling into the toilet bowl and clogging the pipes.

Don’t Flush Grease Down the Toilet

Hopefully, it will never come to it, but if there’s ever a time you are considering flushing grease in your toilet, don’t do it. Grease solidifies when it encounters cool water. It will become sludgy and clog your pipes.

Additionally, grease will move slowly through your plumbing system and trap other objects. It will build up to slow water flow or block your pipes completely.

Use Bamboo Toilet Paper

Bamboo toilet paper consists of fibers that have been broken down through rolling and fermentation. It dissolves almost instantly when it encounters toilet water. It will greatly reduce the risk of clogs.

Although bamboo toilet paper dissolves easily in water, it is also incredibly strong. It won’t break apart in your hands. You can even use it for wiping up spills.

The paper is made with all natural materials. It is chemical-free, so it won’t clog toilets. Its eco-friendliness combines with the rolling and fermentation process to make it extremely biodegradable.

Additionally, bamboo is a fast-growing crop. Unlike trees that can take a hundred years to regenerate, bamboo grows in minutes. It does not contribute to deforestation.
